If you held your courage when the Australian ration buy hit bottom in Tread 2009 and bought shares or retained your holdings, you could be a victor. But if you fled and now are buying back in, you could be a sad sack.

In Walk 2009, the sharemarket had plunged to around 3,100 points, compared to a bill of 6,800 in November 2007, as the pandemic monetary moment spooked investors.

But since then the retail has recovered to around 4,700 points.

"A loads of investors will perhaps be saying: `What did I agitation about in the first scene'," CommSec chief economist Craig James says.

"What this year (2009) highlights is the value of the old adage that it's the period in the furnish rather than the deal in timing.

Mr James said that in 2009, gold and the materials sector, banks and retailers quite stood out in terms of gains.

Losing sectors for the year included the surety and legitimate assets sectors, the telecommunications sector and utilities.

"It's the non-toxic-haven and defensive areas that have underperformed, and that's to be expected preordained that we've had a cyclical bettering," Mr James said.

Mr James said the companies rising the most among the top 200 companies on the Australian Securities Exchange over 2009 were flu cure developer Biota (up 651 per cent), copper and gold Canada entrepreneur PanAust (up 571 per cent), uranium explorer Quote Resources (529 per cent), copper and gold regisseur Medusa Mining (435 per cent), and ING Industrial Wealth (277 per cent).
