Perrine Lietaer, English and spanish junior, sneezed and was surprised to hear the words, “Bless you.”
Panic ensued.
Lietaer, an exchange student from Belgium, had never faced this situation in the U.S. and didn’t know how to respond. Her roommate instructed her to say, “Thank you.”
“I want to make sure I’m not rude,” Lietaer said. “Some times I say things and then I’m worried because I’m not sure if it’s rude here. Maybe it’s not in Belgium, but it is here. That’s the worst part, because I’m not sure.”
This fall, a record number of exchange students like Lietaer are calling the Texas State campus home and have immersed themselves in the academics, culture and weather on campus.
Isis De La O, coordinator of Continuing Education for the Office of Distance and Extended Learning, said the university has worked with institutions around the world, including Japan. The program has established a “very strong relationship with them.”
De La O said the growth in the number of exchange students is because of word of mouth by students who have enjoyed the program.
