And Toerber speaks from experience. For roughly 30 years, his family has hosted foreign exchange students as part of long-term and short-term exchange programs sponsored by Rotary. In one instance, several years ago, a Brazilian student stayed with the Toerber family for four weeks, and the results were amazing, Toerber said.
Toerber’s son was in high school at the time and was initially skeptical of the program. Soon, however, Toerber’s son and the exchange student became close friends, and they remain in contact to this day, Toerber said. Toerber’s son later went to Brazil to stay with the exchange student’s family, and the two have even traveled together on several occasions, Toerber said.
“They became the best of friends,” Toerber said.

Foreign students who participate and their family members generally speak English as a second language, states a Rotary news release. The host families are responsible for providing local activities for the visiting student, the release states.
